Protect Yourself (and Your Plants) When Picking Produce

As September ends and October begins, there are a bounty of crops ready to harvest, such as melons, peppers, tomatoes and squash, including pumpkins. The crops will ripen until the first killing frost of the year, says horticulture expert Melinda Myers. Plus, although the weather is cooler, says Myers, people's summer plantings of vegetables like Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli and Kale will actually keep maturing up until a killing frost. If they experience a light frost, their flavor can actually improve. In addition, if you planted greens, turnips, beets or radishes late, they will reach maturity during the fall season and be ready to harvest.
