The U.S. Workforce is Declining - and Pain has been Cited as a Major Factor

The number of people in the U.S. workforce - or the number of people who are either employed or looking for a job - has been declining over the past few years, and pain has been cited as one of the major reasons behind it. This decline could mean increased inequality - and therefore higher tension - within society in the coming years. That’s according to as new paper by Princeton University labor economist Alan Krueger, which was released this week in advance of its presentation at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston conference this weekend. This paper, titled “Where Have All the Workers Gone?,”[1] paints a distressing picture of the future of the American workforce – one in which pain plays a prominent part.
